Are QR codes safe for credit unions

Let’s have a real talk about QR codes. They’re everywhere—on marketing materials, websites, even receipts. But are they safe for your credit union? The answer isn’t always simple, so let’s break it down together in a way that’s easy to understand.

I’m all about empowering you, not overwhelming you, so here’s what you need to know to protect your members and your marketing efforts.

Who Created Your QR Code? It Matters.

Not all QR code generators are created equal. Some of those free online tools seem like a quick fix, but did you know they could be tracking users, inserting hidden redirects, or even allowing someone else to change your link after the fact? Yikes.

Be aware: If you’re using a free tool without understanding its security features, you might be putting your members at risk without even realizing it.

Static vs. Dynamic QR Codes—Know the Difference

When you create a QR code, you need to know whether it’s static or dynamic—this is key.

  • Static QR Codes (What We Like) – The link cannot be changed after it’s created. This is the safest option, and it ensures that your QR code will always direct members to the intended place.
  • Dynamic QR Codes (Proceed with Caution) – The URL can be changed later, which is convenient but also a security risk if the provider’s platform is ever compromised.

What We Like: Canva’s Static QR Code Generator

Here’s my favorite safe, simple, and free solution: Canva’s static QR code generator.

It’s free (no hidden costs!)
No tracking links—it doesn’t insert anything weird
It’s static, so the link is locked in and secure

If you need a QR code for your credit union’s marketing, start with Canva. It’s what we use, and it works.

Are You Paying Per Code? Let’s Not.

Some vendors try to charge you per QR code or lock you into a subscription just to keep your QR codes active. Don’t fall for it.

Paying per code? Nope.
Monthly fees just to keep your links live? No thanks.
Canva gives you a free, secure option. Use it!

Final Thoughts: Keep It Safe & Simple

  • Use a trusted QR code generator (avoid sketchy free tools).
  • Be cautious with dynamic QR codes—they come with risks.
  • Don’t pay per code when free, secure options exist.
  • If you’re looking for a safe, easy choice, Canva’s QR tool is your friend.

You’ve got this. QR codes can be a great tool for credit unions, as long as they’re used smartly and securely.
